Our Story
Fire Island Conservation – SAVING OUR OCEANS, AND THE CREATURES LIVING IN IT, ONE PROJECT AT TIME.
What started as an ambitious project to build a luxury boutique hotel on a private island, has given birth to a massive venture to create a sustainable safe haven for wildlife, particularly marine, on and around Ilha do Fogo, off the North Coast of Mozambique.
Read our story, that has attracted global interest, and see how you can get involved in saving our oceans, one project at a time.
Our Projects
Through our efforts to understand locals’ harvesting of endangered marine life, we realised that in order to protect the animals, we must offer an alternative source of sustenance and income. We are establishing several skills development projects, aquaculture farms, and building tourism in the area, to create job opportunities for local communities

Aquafarming
Turtles are seen by locals as a source of protein. Through our efforts to understand the residents’ harvesting of turtles, we realised that to protect wildlife, communities need alternative means of sustenance. Tilapia fish farms can provide locals with a reliable source of nutritional fish and an opportunity to sell fish at local markets, creating revenue for families.

Sundome Project
Our purpose-built solar stills can produce over 20 litres of fresh water per day, per still utilising seawater or grey water. We use these stills to ensure freshwater on Ilha do Fogo, however, funding is required to develop more solar stills for the coastal communities, providing fresh drinking water for families in the area.

Pottery Workshops
The goal of this project is to offer local communities an alternative means to taking vulnerable marine life. Apprentices will be trained in every aspect of the ceramic process, from identifying and mining local materials, to processing and creating functional works of art. We aim to teach locals a whole range of industry skills, extending to supply chain management, sales and marketing.

Carpentry Workshops
Alongside our FSC-registered partners, LevasFlor, our goal for the project is to create a facility that can process responsibly harvested wood and train locals in carpentry skills. Apprentices will be identified from the communities and we will sell or export manufactured products, keeping the profits in Mozambique, to the benefit of the local population.

Our Presence
As all the Fire Island Conservation Projects are self-funded at this point, we use a portion of the profits generated from our private lodges to assist with the conservation projects, and tourism will always play a key role in the sustainability of these projects.
