The turtle monitors ensure the protection of nesting turtles on Ilha do Fogo, keeping an eye on the nests until the hatchlings emerge. The project aims to identify individuals from the local community who show an aptitude for turtle and marine protection and fund their formal training with Maputo National Park.
Through our efforts to understand locals’ harvesting of endangered marine life, we realised that in order to protect the animals, we must offer an alternative source of sustenance and income. We are establishing several skills development projects, and building tourism in the area, to create job opportunities for local communities.
Why It Matters
Ilha do Fogo, a hidden gem off the coast of Mozambique, is not just a beautiful island; it’s a sanctuary for three endangered turtle species. These magnificent creatures call this island home, and their survival is under constant threat due to poaching and unsustainable fishing practices. But we believe in a brighter future for both the turtles and the local communities.
Our Vision
We are on a mission to protect the turtles and empower the people who reside in this area of the Zambezia Province. Our approach is simple: when we provide local communities with alternatives to poaching and unsustainable fishing, we create a win-win situation. We’re working tirelessly to establish skills development projects, aquaculture farms, tourism initiatives, and build the area’s blue economy. This will not only safeguard these precious marine animals but also improve the lives of the residents.
Turtle Monitoring
At Present, we have two teams rotating on Ilha Do Fogo. They are responsible for the maintenance of the runway and also keep the beach and reef free of plastic.
Turtles are seen by locals as a source of protein. Through our efforts to understand the residents’ harvesting of turtles, we realised that to protect wildlife, communities need alternative means of sustenance. Tilapia fish farms can provide locals with a reliable source of nutritional fish and an opportunity to sell fish at local markets, creating revenue for families.
Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, we have now completed the rebuild of Pebane Airfield. This is a huge improvement of the infrastructure for this remote section of the Zambezia Province of Mozambique
Our purpose-built solar stills can produce over 20 litres of fresh water per day, per still utilising seawater or grey water. We use these stills to ensure freshwater on Ilha do Fogo, however, funding is required to develop more solar stills for the coastal communities, providing fresh drinking water for families in the area.
The goal of this project is to offer local communities an alternative means to taking vulnerable marine life. Apprentices will be trained in every aspect of the ceramic process, from identifying and mining local materials, to processing and creating functional works of art. We aim to teach locals a whole range of industry skills, extending to supply chain management, sales and marketing.
Alongside our FSC-registered partners, LevasFlor, our goal for the project is to create a facility that can process responsibly harvested wood and train locals in carpentry skills. Apprentices will be identified from the communities and we will sell or export manufactured products, keeping the profits in Mozambique, to the benefit of the local population.

Fish Farm
The Threat to animal species is a complex subject. The Issues cannot be completely attributed to serving greed and medicinal traditions, since a major contributing factor in overpopulation.

Due to the remoteness of Pebane Beach Lodge and Fire Island, fresh waster is an issue. we are developing a solar still that can produce over 20 litres of fresh water per day per still.
The Pebane Harbor Road serves as the vital gateway to Ilha do Fogo. This island, a sanctuary for endangered turtles and a source of livelihood for local communities, relies on the Pebane Harbor Road for transportation and access to essential resources.
Northern Mozambique possesses some of the highest quality hardwood in the world. The area has been subject to irresponsible over-harvesting, which has almost depleted the natural forests.
